FAQ
-
What is Ocean Roamer?
Ocean Roamer is a sail-powered expedition platform supporting marine science, conservation, and storytelling in remote and ecologically important ocean environments.
-
What types of projects do you support?
We work with NGOs, researchers, conservation groups and media teams on projects including but not limited to marine megafauna surveys, BRUV deployments, acoustic monitoring, photogrammetry, behavioural studies, conservation storytelling and policy-relevant fieldwork.
-
Where do you operate?
We currently work across the North Atlantic and Caribbean, with upcoming expeditions to the Turks and Caicos (Spring 2026) and West Greenland (Summer 2026). Our vessel is designed to go anywhere, from the tropics to the poles, including deep offshore waters, shallow banks, remote islands and harder-to-reach regions.
-
Are you a charter vessel?
No. We are not a tourism charter. We operate exclusively for research, conservation, and mission-based expeditions.
-
What makes your vessel different from traditional research boats?
Our platform is a small, low-impact and low-cost solution to traditional research vessels. Our shallow draft allows us to operate in areas that larger vessels cannot reach, and our small size keeps us agile. We maximise field time, reduce emissions, and provide both scientific and media support in one team.
-
What experience does your crew have?
Ocean Roamer is led by a skilled team, consisting of a marine scientist and a captain / expedition specialist. Together they bring extensive experience in offshore sailing, field research, media production, and over 1,000 hours of scientific field time across multiple expeditions.
-
Can you support equipment deployment?
Yes. We regularly support BRUV surveys, drone operations, acoustic monitoring, behavioural sampling and other field methodologies. If you have a specific technique in mind, just ask.
-
Do you collect data independently?
Yes — we undertake our own research-led expeditions and collect independent data that contributes to conservation and storytelling. However, the majority of our work is done in collaboration with NGOs, researchers and conservation organisations, where we support their scientific objectives through fieldwork, logistics and data collection. We often co-author scientific outputs, but data ownership remains with the lead organisation unless agreed otherwise.
-
Do you offer reduced-cost or pro-bono work?
Where projects demonstrate strong conservation value, community benefit or policy relevance, we may offer reduced-cost collaboration or pro-bono work. This is assessed case-by-case.
-
What does an expedition typically cost?
Costs vary by region, duration and project scope. As a sail-powered vessel, our operational costs are far lower than traditional research platforms. For a detailed budget, please get in touch.
-
How many people can join an expedition?
Capacity depends on the region, and the food, equipment and fuel necessities of the intended project. We can accommodate three project partners in addition to our core team to stay onboard for a prolonged period. However, for day missions we capacity for an additional six people.
-
What safety protocols do you follow?
We operate to offshore safety standards, including VHF/DSC, satellite communications, emergency beacons, comprehensive medical kits and strict at-sea protocols. For every mission, we develop detailed risk assessments and tailored safety procedures to match the conditions, objectives and operational environment. All partners joining us receive the necessary safety training and on-board briefings to ensure they are fully prepared and confident in the field.
-
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We carry public liability cover. Visiting researchers or media partners must hold personal expedition insurance in addition to join our missions.
-
How do you minimise environmental impact?
We operate primarily under sail, avoid unnecessary engine use, practice low-impact anchoring, reduce single-use plastics, and follow strict wildlife interaction protocols.
-
Do you produce media for partners?
Yes. We can deliver photography, film, drone footage, outreach content and podcast storytelling to support science communication and conservation impact.
-
How quickly can we receive data or media?
Raw data can usually be transferred immediately after the expedition. Processed data or media are delivered on timelines agreed at the start of the project.
-
How do we begin a collaboration?
Email us with an outline of your project or idea. We’ll arrange an intro call, discuss feasibility, and build a proposal tailored to your objectives.
